Brian starred on the 91 football team for Stepinac. He played SE & S for the Crusaders. The Crusaders finished the regular season with a 5-1 record, losing to only Mount. Went to AAA playoffs only to lose to Chaminade in 1st round. This week Brian was called up to the Padres to face Randy Johnson. Johson recorded his 4000 strike out in that game. Sweeney got the win 3-2 for his 1st Major league win. His record with Padres this year is 1-0 with a 3.68 era in 3 appearances. After game Brian was informed that he would be returning to minors. Brian took the lineup card & the ball that ended the game, back to Portland with him . Brian said of his outing " It's still sinking in. I had 35 voicemails last night after the game." " I really didn't beat Randy Johnson - the team did. It's a memory that I'll never forget." Manager Bruce Bochy said of Sweeney " I really thought he'd keep us in the ball game, But I didn't he'd put up zeros in the first five innings. but he didn't suprize me. He knows what he is doing out there."
Great job by a former Crusader football star, Beating Randy Johnson head to head. Good Luck Brian Sweeney!!
