Crusaders come up short in Staten Island

Posted Monday, September 26, 2005 by Mike ODonnell

The Crusaders traveled to Staten Island on Sunday to face undefeated St Peter's at port Richmond HS. St peter's got on board first scoring on long 45 yd pass play over outstretched arms of Kevin Royale. to take a 7-0 lead. Crusaders responded with a long drive running ball behind Off Line & workhorse Nick Venice whow was back after missing last game with Knee injury. Venice scored on a 1 yard run & Step missed extra point to make game 7-6. Crusaders put together a couple of more good drives but came away empty in first half. St Peter's scored on a 9 yd run by Nigel Tomlin.

In second half St Peter's broke a long run after 5 Crusaders had hands on Tomlin for a 76 yard TD. The crusaders didn't quit & marched ball down field & couldn't get in on two downs from the 1/2 foot line. Our players, fans & Coaches celebrated twice thinking Venice was in endzone. The Refs from Staten Island believed differently. The Crusader then recorded a saftey on Bob Mc Donough tackle of Tomlin in endzone. The crusader put together two more drives but were unable to hit paydirt. Crusaders still had some time & threw long pass up sidelines to Slowley which he caught & ref ruled him out. [ Coaches thought he had two feet in[ not just one] & was hit while ball was in air but Staten Island officials saw it differently] called play incomplete.
St peter's scored a meaningless TD with less than a minute to play.

Over all the effort & play of team was very good but we gave up to many big plays. Stepinac had 51 OFF plays to St Peter's 25. It was nice to have Venice, Mohan & Maddalo back in pads from injuries. Chris Giardini missed game with injury.
Great games on Defense side by Bob McDonough, Paul Faia & Paul Mohan.
On OFF Venice had great day 132 yards 1 TD on 27 carries. Greg Datino added 40 yards, Rashaad Slowley 50 yards rushing.

Next up is a very Good Cardinal Hayes team. Sat at 1 pm Hayes is 1-1 with loss to St Francis 15-14 & win over Spellman 47-6. Sat is Alumni day & we will be retiring Chuck Ogbogu's #7 at Halftime. Chuck was the single season rushing leader in Stepinac History. He passed away suddenly at Home after a football workout at Thomas More College in Cinn. Please come out & support the Crusaders!
