Saturday's livecast will feature two football powers in their respective regions. Monroe-Woodbury (Hudson Valley- Section 9) won the New York state championship in 2005 and was a finalist in 2006-2008. The Crusaders held a 63-game winning streak against Section 9 opponents before it was snapped by Newburgh Free Academy last season.
Archbishop Stepinac (Westchester- CHSFL) advanced to the Catholic league’s AAA championship for the first time in school history in 2011 and has become a consistent power in the last few years including a dominant 2010 season when the Crusaders won the AA championship.
Monroe-Woodbury started the season with a 38-26 victory over Binghamton (Section 4) last week under first-year coach Bernie Connolly. The long-time Monroe-Woodbury assistant will be coaching against his high school alma mater.
Archbishop Stepinac will open its season against M-W under the lights in the annual Joe Riverso Memorial Game. Riverso, who was a captain and coach at Stepinac, was killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Players to watch
Dan Hoffer (Sr. QB): One of the top quarterbacks in the region with a cannon for an arm.
Dan Pomposello (Sr., OL): A space-eater in the middle, Pomposello is getting college attention.
Kevin Carr (Jr., QB): Ran for over 200 yards in a season-opening win over Binghamton.
Justin Kaffenberger (Sr., WR): One of the best athletes on the field, could start at QB anywhere.
