St. Anthony's quarterback Charlie Raffa (r.) escaped the grasps of numerous defenders this past season and helped the Friars win the CHSFL 'AAA' championship. He'll play lacrosse at maryland.

Here are the best football players in Westchester/Long Island:

Borough player of the year: QB Charlie Raffa, St. Anthony's, Sr.

While there may be more gifted players in the league who compiled better numbers, nobody else had Raffa's combination of leadership and skill.

The senior quarterback was a steady presence under center who could be relied upon to play his best when his team needed him most. He finished seventh in the league with 910 rushing yards while leading the league with a 221.83 quarterback rating.

Always reliable, Raffa tossed 11 touchdowns and threw just one interception, completing 64% of his passes for 890 yards. He led the Friars to a perfect season and saved his best performance for the end, throwing for 255 yards and four TDs in the Gaels' 41-23 championship victory over Iona Prep.

Three of those scoring passes went to senior Brian Kensil, and the teammates shared the game MVP honors.

SECOND TEAM ALL-BOROUGH

RB Brian Sherlock, St. Anthony's, Jr.

WR Jack Stillwagon, Iona Prep, Sr.

TE Austin Taps, Stepinac, Jr.

Borough coach of the year: Mike O'Donnell, Stepinac

Followers of the CHSFL knew something was up in Week 1 of the season, when Stepinac marched onto Iona Prep's home field and handed the Gaels a humbling 23-6 defeat.

That win, over the eventual CHSFL 'AAA' finalists, proved to be the catalyst for a special season for the Crusaders. Following that win, Stepinac rattled off six more regular-season victories before cruising through the postseason and winning the 'AA' championship by rolling over Kellenberg, 41-7, in the title game.

Through it all, O'Donnell provided guidance for a talented group of players who looked to him for leadership.

Though the Crusaders will lose talented seniors Donnie Simmons and Tyrell Goodman to graduation, they should be set on the sideline for years to come.
