All-state football: Goodman named Class A co-player of the year

After releasing the Class B, C and D honorees last week, the New York State Sportswriters Association released its list of all-state players in Classes AA and A today.

Stepinac quarterback Tyrell Goodman (left), The Journal News’ Westchester/Putnam player of the year, was named the co-state player of the year in Class A along with Aquinas running back Mike Messina. Goodman led Stepinac to the first perfect season in program history and its second CHSFL AA championship in four years. He was named the CHSFL AA offensive player of the year and was the MVP of the championship and Turkey Bowl games. Messina led Aquinas to a victory in the Class A state championship over Harrison.

Not surprisingly, the top honor in Class AA went to Rush-Henrietta QB Ashton Broyld, who led the program to the first state title in its history.

The first team in Class AA includes three of the other top players in the Lower Hudson Valley: Iona Prep running back Sidney Weston and linebacker Michael Longo and New Rochelle defensive back Jordan Lucas.

The first team in Class A is loaded with local representation. In addition to Goodman, the list includes: Nyack tackle Maxim Ngolla; Horace Greeley center Joe Magardino; Harrison center/guard Duke Alvora; Stepinac defensive end Donnie Simmons; Harrison linebacker Tanner Knox; and Eastchester quarterback/safety Thomas DiCarlo.

Five local players were also named to the second team in Class A, which speaks to the depth of that class.

It really was a banner year in the area for high school football. It included: two state champions and a CHSFL champion; three state finalists and five state semifinalists; two of the top three CHSFL teams; and the Fairchester League champion. Now, throw in three of the state players of the year. Not a bad haul.
