Stepinac Beats St John's 35-14

St. Joseph by the Sea locked up a berth in the CHSAA Class AAA playoffs with a wild 40-35 win against Kellenberg in both team’s final regular season game Saturday afternoon in Huguenot.

The Vikings, which will either be a No. 7 or No. 8 seed, depending on Sunday’s game between Holy Cross and Mount St. Michael, booked its ticket in dramatic fashion as Michael Scacco connected with John Diaz for a 22-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

It was the Vikings first pass attempt of the game.

Diaz also rushed 31 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns, Michael Petrino had 12 carries for 142 yards and a score and Justin Mangiacasale had 24 carries for 134 yards and a TD to lead St. Joseph by the Sea (4-4, 3-4 AAA), ranked No. 10 in the CHSFL by The Post.

 

Nick Fiore was 12-of-20 for 196 yards and a touchdown, Evan Calvo had 23 carries for 117 yards and a score and Matt McDaniels rushed for three TDs and had a 79-yard touchdown reception for Kellenberg (3-5, 2-5), which will likely host Christ the King in a Class AA quarterfinal playoff game next weekend.

Archbishop Stepinac 35, St. John the Baptist 14: With the game tied at 14, Tyrell Goodman (6-of-9, 109 yards, 3 TDs, nine carries, 74 yards) connected with Austin Taps for an 18-yard touchdown, Robert Kocur recovered a fumble and scored on a 10-yard run and Goodman found Nick Euvino for an 8-yard TD, the duo’s second of the game, to put the game away for No. 3 Archbishop Stepinac (8-0, 7-0 Class AA-A) in both team’s final regular-season game Saturday afternoon in West Islip.

Caleb Gilligan Evans (14 carries, 96 yards) had a 15-yard touchdown run for the Crusaders, who meet St. Francis Prep in the Class AA quarterfinals next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Derelle Hunter rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including a 70-yarder to open the scoring in the first quarter for St. John the Baptist (4-4, 3-4), which is the top seed in the Class A playoffs and hosts Cardinal Spellman next Sunday in the semifinals.

St. Peter’s 20, Cardinal Spellman 13: Jonathan Barrata intercepted Kyle Benjamin on the Eagles 40 with 50 seconds left in the game to seal the win for St. Peter’s (3-5, 3-4). Saturday afternoon in The Bronx. Barratta caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Dan Lowe with three minutes left in the third quarter to make it 20-0. Germain Ngaba took the ensuing kickoff back 85 yards for a score and Benjamin added a 7-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for Spellman (0-8, 0-7), which will visit St. John the Baptist in the Class A semifinals. The Eagles, who will host Bishop Ford in the other semifinal, got on the board when Justin Robles took an interception back for a TD in the first quarter and Pat Walsh found the end zone from 2-yards out in the second quarter.

Cardinal Hayes 28, Bishop Ford 0: On Friday night at Maritime College, Donald Thomas scored three touchdowns on the ground and Cory Lucas added a rushing score of his own for Cardinal Hayes (4-4, 4-3 ‘AA-A), which will visit either Mount St. Michael or Monsignor Farrell in the Class AA quarterfinals Bishop Ford, which will travel to St. Peter's for a Class A semfinal, is 2-6, 1-6.
