Longtime friend of Stepinac & WPHS -Frank Becerra, newspaper artist dies at 82

Frank Becerra, 82, a lifelong resident of White Plains died May 25, 2009 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Born on April 9, 1927 to the late Theodore and Angelina Becerra. He is survived by his wife Isabel who he married in Spain on May 31, 1952, and his six children. Maria (Denis) Gallagher, Frank (Elizabeth), Peter (Tracey), Joseph, Anthony (Kristin) and William. He was cherished by his nine grandchildren, Krista and Sean Gallagher, Frankie and Alianna Becerra, Stephanie, Matthew, Lauren, Kyle and Taryn Becerra. Frank also leaves his devoted brothers Ned (Cecelia) and Lawrence (Virginia) and sistersin-law Martina (Robert Profetta) and Elia (Aldo Panetta). Frank was an art major at White Plains High School and in 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard serving as a radio man during WWII. After military service he studied at the Art Students League of New York. In 1954 he joined the Macy Westchester Newspapers Group as art director and staff artist. His art projects ranged from political and sports cartoons to illustrated court room sketches. He also free lanced for NBC-TV, National Lampoon, The New York Yankees, The NY Football Giants, Sport magazine, Field & Stream Magazine, The Harness Racing Museum Hall of Fame and The Metropolitan Golf Association. He retired from the Gannett newspapers in 1992 after 38 years of newspaper work. Frank was inducted into the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the White Plains High School Hall of Fame. He was also honored by the Stepinac Grid Iron Club and was awarded the Luric Werden Golf Journalism Award by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association. Frank was a member of the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department Hope Engine Co #1 and was a passionate fisherman and golfer. Frank's life revolved around his family and friends and he will always be remembered as a compassionate, humble and giving person.
