Balanced Effort For Football Team At Annual Spring Game
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman tailback Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) paced a diverse ground attack with 109 yards on 20 carries, while senior quarterback Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) completed 9-of-13 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns to highlight the individual efforts for the Southern Connecticut State University football team in its annual spring game on Saturday. The Owls’ defense also fared well, stopping the offense on 13 of 17 possessions to go along with three interceptions and seven sacks.

In all, the offense tallied 24 points on the afternoon. The first tally was a 26-yard field goal from freshman Christopher Hazelton (New Britain, Conn.). That kick concluded an impressive 19-play, 86-yard drive by the offense.

Southern’s next score capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive. This time, Roberts connected with redshirt freshman wide receiver Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) on a 40-yard scoring strike.

The offense would tack on one more score in the first half. After freshman Jack Cooper (Berlin, Conn.) picked off a pass and returned it to the 10-yard line, SCSU punched in a score two plays later on a two-yard plunge by John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine).

The only scoring in the second half came at the conclusion of a six-play, 73-yard drive on a seven-yard pass from Roberts to freshman Brian Cervantes (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
