WHITE PLAINS - Maurice Easterling caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Collins with 19 seconds left to give Stepinac a 20-13 win over Fordham Prep in a CHSFL matchup.
The touchdown ended the scoring in a wild fourth quarter that saw the Rams rally from 13 points down to tie the game with 1:22 left. With the win, Stepinac stopped a three-game losing streak.
"It's a big difference," Easterling said of the team's 2-3 record instead of being 1-4. "We just have to go from here. I'm happy I was able to help the team win."
Easterling did plenty to aid the Crusaders' cause. He scored on runs of 40 yards and 20 yards in the first half to give Stepinac a 13-0 lead that it held until the fourth quarter.
"We've got to pick it up a little in the second half, we came out a little slow," Easterling said. "The games are four quarters."
The Rams finally got their offense going in the second half. They came up empty on a long drive in the third quarter, but finally got on the board when Brendan McGlynn connected with Connor Brown for a 57-yard score with 9:13 remaining.
Fordham Prep (2-3) then tied the game on a 1-yard touchdown pass from McGlynn to Charles Argast on a fourth-and-goal with 1:22 to play, but failed to convert on the extra point.
"We thought we had them, but we fell asleep on defense," Argast said.
Stepinac got the ball at the 35 with no timeouts, but Easterling promptly broke a 31-yard run to put the Crusaders in scoring position.
"You've got to wrap him up," Argast said. "He's not overtly strong, but if you don't get him, he's gone. He's a really good back."
