St. Joseph by-the-Sea's football team is the top-ranked team in the New York City area and No. 5 overall in the State (Class AA), according to the New York State Sportwriter's Association poll.

The Vikings scored a 29-7 win over Hudson Cathlolic (N.J.) last weekend while grinding out 292 rushing yards.

Curtis (8th) and Port Richmond (17th) of the PSAL were the only other Island teams to make the NYSSWA Top 25 this week. The Warriors were ranked third in the city, one slot ahead of the Raiders.

Curtis defeated Sheepshead Bay (ranked 7th in NYC) 22-16 last week. PR topped JFK (which received honorable mention votes in NYC) 26-20.

Other area teams ranked in the state include the CHSFL's St. Anthony's (6th) and Iona Prep (9th) and the PSAL's Boys & Girls (25th).
