sports in the Lower Hudson ValleyFinal preseason rankings
September 6

In continuing the countdown to kickoff tomorrow, here are my updated preseason rankings. We?ll get the real thing on Monday after teams play their first game. But don?t expect this to change too much.

Large Schools
1. New Rochelle: A nice win over Saunders on Saturday will set up a showdown with John Jay in Week 2.
2. John Jay: Speaking of Jay, it too has a managable opening week against at Yorktown.
3. Iona Prep: I flip-flopped the Gaels and Mount after watching a little of Iona?s practice on Tuesday. The line is huge and Mount is rebuilding its line after graduating five seniors.
4. Mount St. Michael: Still one of the best, despite getting hit hard by graduation.
5. Harrison: Word out of Harrison practices is that Joe Denti is tearing it up and is poised for a big year.
6. North Rockland: We?ll learn a lot about this team after Saturday when it faces two-time Section 9 champion Monroe-Woodbury.
7. Ossining: Up from the No. 10 spot, this team apparently looked phenomenal at the scrimmage. If you think they?re hurting at the skill positions, you?re wrong.
8. Stepinac: I've dranken the Kool Aid and am giving the Crusaders a chance against an Iona Prep team that's dominated them the last two years.
9. Clarkstown South: From what I?m told, Antoine McGuill?s status for the opener is in question because of injury and the Vikings didn?t look sharp at the scrimmage. We?ll see.
10. Poughkeepsie: Next year the Pioneers will drop down to Class A. They might leave their mark in AA first.
Honorable mention: Mahopac; Gorton, Horace Greeley; Mount Vernon.

Small schools
1. Dobbs Ferry: Keeping the Eagles ahead of Rye for now. Let me get a look at the Rye, though, and I might reconsider.
2. Rye: The Garnets left the John Jay scrimmage feeling pretty good about themselves.
3. Sleepy Hollow: Had a reputable guy tell me this week that: ?Sleepy is definitely going to beat Rye.? We?ll see.
4. Nanuet: This team has a lot going for itself, especially the schedule.
5. Tuckahoe: Don?t underestimate how good Joey Melendez really is.
Honorable mention: Pelham; Croton-Harmon.
