Varsity puts it in full drive vs. Xavier

Posted Friday, October 08, 2004 by Mike ODonnell
Lats Sat. was Alumni day at Archbishop Stepinac HS. About 150- 200 Alumns & friends crowded the Alumni tent for a BBQ & fun. But that was not the highlight of their day. The 2004 Crusaders took the field & put on a great display of all their hard work. Many former Crusaders wish they could still strap on the equipment & go out on the field just once more. But the BBQ is probably a safer place to be.
The team showed many why the coaches are very excited about his group. They play very hard & seem to get 11 guys to the ball all day long. Dwayne Jones had another great day with 3 TD's & over 200 yds again. George Kehayas continued his excellent play with a 48 yd intercetion for a TD & many tackles. The offensive line controlled the tempo much of the day [ Hannon, Kolman-mandle, Giardini, Faia, Debo & Rush} & Mike Henderson put in another great job at QB. Matt Salacan scored on a long TD run. Other TD's were scored by Cleary & Venice, Carrlton Mariette [DEBO]also scored on a blocked punt for a safety. The Stepinac Defense scored a TD 2 weeks in a row. The Crusadrers continue to work on our ballhawk drills every Def day , so hopefully we will be scoopin & scorin all year long. Great effort by our Def kept Xavier off balance much of the afternoon. Strong linebacker play by Shanahan, Middleton & McDonough was the talk of many Alumni after the game. Junior tackle Chris Giardini has moved to DE & is loving the space he is given to roam the field. He is really growing into a fine player.
Stepinac goes to undefeated Holy Cross at Bayside Sat at 2:30.
Don't forget next week is the 4th annual Joseph R Riverso night Game vs Iona. It is a great night in Westchester Football in honor of our much missed coach & friend Joe Riverso #70. Say a prayer for our troops. WE WILL NEVER FORGET!
