The Crusaders took the field in Bronx, banged up from the tough Mount game a week ago. Stating HB's FJ Collins & Mark Cleary were both ruled out because of injuries. Then HB Luke Kehayas sprained his ankle on Tuesday. Stepinac went from having a deep Backfield to very few options in a short time. Matt Middleton & Matt Salacan stepped up to do a great job handling the HB spot. But the star of game was without a doubt was Dwayne Jones. His 34 carry 262 yds & 2 Td's was something to watch. Running hard & breaking tackles Jones carried the Crusaders to 1st win of season. Another star would have to go to George Kehayas, normally known for his work on the defensive side of ball. George stepped in at HB & blocked like no tomorrow. He had at least 3 pancake blocks & never stopped all day long. The Offensive line did a great job opening holes & staying on blocks all day. This group is really maturing into a solid senior led line. Rush, Hannon, Kolman-mandle, Mariette, Giardini & Faia could be really great line, if they stay healthy & continue to improve. Mike Henderson also threw his 1st TD pass & did a great job of calling the right plays at the line of scrimmage. Nick Parente caught a TD & Matt Estremera had a great day making some great catches.
On Defense the crusaders again proved to be special. Getting 11 Stepinac hats to the ball all day long. They held Hayes scoreless until the 3 rd quarter. Hayes was never able to drive the ball down the field & score. Rich Shanahan led Stepinac tacklers & George Kehayas had another strong day. Jamal Jones who hurt his knee on Friday played a great game considering the coaches didn't think he would play at all. Stepinac Defensive line did a great job putting pressure on Hayes QB all day long. Crusaders recorded 4 sacks & many pressures. Junior Chris Giardini might have found a new home at Defensive end. He has shown great promise at that position. The Stepinac - Hayes trophy will stay in White Plains for at least one more year
